Keeping Your Feet Healthy Through the Golden Years

MAY 10, 2021 / FOOT CARE

You know your feet are important – that’s why you take such good care of them! From daily cleaning and scrubbing to weekly clipping and shaping, taking care of your feet is just part of many people’s regular personal hygiene routine.

As you age, taking care of your feet becomes increasingly important, and increasingly difficult. If you’re concerned or looking for tips on foot care for seniors, talk to a foot care nurse, or keep reading for more information!

The way your feet look and feel can actually tell a lot about your overall health. Keep an eye on your toenails and watch for signs of discoloration, chipping, or changes in the shape and texture of the nail (like dents, grooves or ripples). All of these things could be symptoms of other health issues and are worth making an appointment with your doctor.

  1. One easy but important way to care for your feet as you age is by staying hydrated. It can help reduce dryness and itchiness, and make your nails look and feel healthier and easier to cut.
  2. Cut and file your toenails any time they get long enough to get caught on a sock.
  3. Use a good-quality foot cream before bed to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, and better prepared to handle cuts and scrapes. Afterwards, put on some socks to hold in all that moisture while you sleep.
  4. Wash your feet in the shower and keep an eye for any sores that seem to be healing more slowly than normal. If you find this is happening, make an appointment to see your doctor.

For many people, taking care of their feet becomes more difficult as they age, as their mobility just isn’t what it used to be. This is perfectly normal.
